A Rising Star: 14-Year-Old Liam Fanning Joins His First U.S. Amputee Soccer Camp

At just 14 years old, Liam Fanning is already proving that age is just a number when it comes to determination, skill, and heart. This summer, Liam took part in his very first training camp with the U.S. Men’s National Amputee Soccer Team — a major milestone not only for him but for the future of amputee soccer in the United States.

Liam discovered amputee soccer after searching for a sport that would challenge him and allow him to compete at a high level despite his limb difference. From the moment he picked up his forearm crutches and stepped onto the pitch, it was clear he had found something special. With a natural feel for the game, a fierce competitive spirit, and an eagerness to learn, Liam quickly earned the respect of his teammates — most of whom are seasoned adult players.

“it's very intense it's great competition,” Liam said after the camp. “To play with the older players is like a great experience being 14 years old, and playing with guys older is pretty fun.”

His father, who attended the camp alongside him, shared just how meaningful this opportunity has been. “Everyone's so welcoming, really bringing Liam into the fold. Making him feel like he's part of the family”

The camp offered Liam more than just elite-level coaching — it gave him a sense of community. Surrounded by athletes with shared experiences and a shared love for the game, Liam felt empowered and inspired. He left the camp not only with improved technical skills but with a renewed confidence that he’s on the right path.

As the U.S. Men’s National Team prepares for the World Cup Qualifiers in Mexico, stories like Liam’s remind us of the importance of investing in the future of adaptive sports. The American Amputee Soccer Association (AASA) continues to create life-changing opportunities for athletes of all ages and abilities, and Liam’s journey is just getting started.

Stay tuned — because this 14-year-old has only just begun to make his mark on the world of amputee soccer.
