The beautiful game just got bigger on the West Coast. The American Amputee Soccer Association (AASA) officially touched down in Southern California, hosting our first-ever regional amputee soccer clinic in sunny San Diego.

For years, AASA has worked tirelessly to grow the sport, cultivate world-class athletes, and build communities across the United States. While our presence has traditionally been heavily rooted in other regions, expanding to the West Coast has been a long-held dream. This past weekend, that dream became a reality on the pitch.

A Field of All Ages and Ambitions

The energy at the clinic was nothing short of electric. The turnout exceeded our initial expectations, drawing adaptive athletes from all walks of life. We were incredibly inspired to see participants across the entire age spectrum, ranging from eager children experiencing the sport for the first time to adults sharpening their athletic prowess.

Crutches clicked, soccer balls hit the back of the net, and smiles were constant. The atmosphere was a perfect blend of high-intensity athletic training and joyful community building. For many participants, it was their first time sharing a field with fellow amputee soccer players, providing a profound sense of belonging and shared purpose.

"The response from the San Diego community was overwhelming. Seeing players leave the field with new skills, new friends, and a desire for permanent local programming is exactly why we do this work."

Building a Sustainable Future in SoCal

This clinic was never intended to be a one-time event. The primary goal of our West Coast expansion is to establish a self-sustaining ecosystem for adaptive soccer in the region. The overwhelming consensus from the weekend was loud and clear: San Diego wants more amputee soccer activity.

Based on the incredible reception, we are already working behind the scenes to map out future training sessions, competitive clinics, and eventually, a formalized regional footprint. This is only the beginning of a vibrant community of West Coast athletes ready to dominate the sport.

With Deep Gratitude to Our Partners

An expansion of this scale requires a dedicated team of champions. We owe a massive thank you to the organizations that stepped up to make this milestone event a resounding success:

  • Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF): Without their foundational support and dedication to adaptive sports, this clinic would not have been possible. They continue to be an essential ally in removing barriers to athletic entry.

  • San Diego FC & San Diego Wave FC: Southern California’s premier soccer clubs generously provided official merchandise for our participants, ensuring every athlete walked away with a souvenir from an unforgettable day.

  • SDSU Adapted Sports Physical Therapy: A phenomenal team of volunteers came out to experience amputee soccer.

What's Next?

As we pack up our gear and look back on a historic weekend, we are filled with immense gratitude for the volunteers, athletes, and families who brought their passion to the field. San Diego has proven it has the talent, heart, and dedication to become a major hub for amputee soccer.

Stay tuned to our channels for updates on our next West Coast dates. We will see you back on the pitch very soon!
