Darren Wynne has always been passionate about soccer, but now his journey has taken a unique turn. The local college soccer coach has been selected to be part of the Team USA Men’s Amputee Soccer coaching staff as they set their sights on qualifying for the 2026 World Cup in Costa Rica.
A Unique Perspective on Soccer
Wynne brings with him a fresh perspective on the game. As a coach for able-bodied players, he is accustomed to expecting the best from athletes with two legs. But coaching amputee players has shown him the true definition of resilience.
“When I’m coaching normal players that have both limbs, I expect them to do everything on the field. But our goalkeepers, for instance, are able to run on a tripod system, and it’s just amazing to see how they outwork players with two legs,” Wynne says, marveling at the determination of amputee soccer players.
