This past weekend, Richmond got a closer look at the fast-growing world of amputee soccer as the American Amputee Soccer Association and partners hosted a clinic at VCU’s Cary Street Field Complex. Led by three-time Amputee World Cup athlete Keith Mann and sports physical therapy specialist Michael Fiorante, the clinic introduced participants to the fundamentals of the sport—from crutch-assisted walking and kicking to shooting drills and scrimmages.
Unlike traditional soccer, amputee soccer is played 7 v 7 with smaller fields and goals, no offsides, and specialized rules for players and goalkeepers. The event highlighted both the physicality and accessibility of the sport, stressing that it’s open to all skill levels, amputees and non-amputees alike. With strong support from VCU Sports Medicine, the Richmond VA Medical Center, Sportable, and the Children’s Hospital, organizers plan to bring the clinic back within the next few months, giving more people the opportunity to experience the competition, teamwork, and joy the game provides.
