Service Above Self: What the U.S. National Amputee Soccer Team Learned at the LT Michael P. Murphy Navy SEAL Museum

With only weeks remaining until the World Cup, preparation is about far more than tactical drills, conditioning sessions, and set pieces. High-level international competition demands mental resilience, absolute trust, and a shared commitment to something greater than the individual.
To reinforce those core values before taking the global stage, the U.S. Men’s National Amputee Soccer Team recently visited the LT Michael P. Murphy Navy SEAL Museum. The experience provided a profound masterclass in sacrifice, purpose, and elite team culture.
Standing on Sacred Ground
Located to honor the legacy of Medal of Honor recipient LT Michael P. Murphy and the wider Naval Special Warfare community, the museum serves as both a memorial and an educational foundation. It stands as a physical reminder of the price of freedom and the standard of excellence maintained by those who serve.
During our time on site, the team had the distinct privilege of receiving a guided tour from Navy SEAL veteran Chris Wyllie. Walking through the history alongside someone who lived the operational reality brought the exhibits to life, detailing the rigorous training, discipline, and mental fortitude required to operate under extreme adversity.
The team was also deeply honored to be greeted personally by Daniel J. Murphy. Mr. Murphy, a combat-wounded Vietnam veteran with the 25th Infantry Division and the Gold Star father of LT Michael P. Murphy, serves as board chairman for the museum and the LT Michael P. Murphy Memorial Scholarship Foundation. His presence and words set an unmistakable tone of humility, purpose, and perspective.
Service Above Self: Mindset for the World Stage
Throughout the museum’s galleries, one core theme resonated across every display: Service Above Self.
For the athletes representing the United States, that philosophy translates directly to the pitch:
Unwavering Brotherhood: In elite units and championship teams alike, success relies on total accountability to the person next to you. Individual accolades take a backseat to collective mission success.
Resilience Under Pressure: The exhibits detail how operators manage the unpredictable, leaning into preparation and grit when circumstances test their limits.
Carrying the Standard: Wearing the red, white, and blue carries weight. Understanding the depth of service shown by our armed forces sharpens our focus on representing the nation with pride and integrity.
Carrying the Mission Forward
The road to the World Cup is defined by relentless preparation. As the final countdown begins, the lessons absorbed at the LT Michael P. Murphy Navy SEAL Museum will remain at the forefront of our mindset.
We extend our sincere gratitude to Daniel J. Murphy, Chris Wyllie, and the entire museum staff for their hospitality and for sharing their time with our squad. We take the field carrying their example of discipline, brotherhood, and dedication with us.
